ancient India, animals were worshipped. Some were even deities.
While others, vehicles or vahana of deities. They were woven into 3000
year old fables, which along with mythological beliefs, kept alive the
Indian traditions of veneration, kindness and ahimsa or non-violence
towards all creatures.

The world, as we know, is not what it used to be and modern India is no
exception. Although the association with gods brought on respect and an
automatic preservation of the animal world–rapid urbanisation has brought
on a degradation of our forests and natural habitats. And the animal
population is dwindling to alarmingly low numbers.
